Blog Journal 7

Teachers should have a webpage under a school website for students and especially parents to get to know their child's teacher and the main objectives of a class. I decided to examine the elements of a webpage from a teacher at my old high school because I think her website is very well designed.

Introduction page for a high school science teacher named Mrs. Fernandez.

From the introduction page, the teacher includes basic information: a self-introduction, the class she is going to teach, and the ways that students and teachers can contact her. Design-wise, the website is neat and inviting; the font size is consistent, and the most important information is either bolded or highlighted. Sections of the course are listed on the left side of the page, including miscellaneous aspects such as a class calendar, photo album, and class wish list. The tab at the end of the list, labeled "APES" (AP Environmental Science), links to a sequential, unit-by-unit compilation of all the lessons that will be taught in that class.

For teachers, productivity is one skill that will help make the job easier. To create an efficient classroom, the teacher should be organized and the students should be engaged in regular classroom activities. In a previous journal, I mentioned a program called Class Dojo, where teachers, students, parents, and administrators are included in a school community where updates and information can be exchanged among participants. The platform has engaging lessons for social-emotional learning that can be assigned in conjunction with regular lessons in a school's curriculum. In other words, students can further their learning by applying the learning skills from regular instruction to topics that don't involve academics (such as having a flexible mindset). Teachers can also easily maintain their class schedules and plan out their lessons with the program. Class Dojo is one program that I would most likely use to create an effective classroom.

Before doing Assignment 2, I hadn't used Canvas for anything more than mostly submitting class assignments and keeping up with class updates. I honestly thought it was fun learning to create a class page with a Canvas group, mostly because I love anything that has to do with design. I liked it was simple to edit in the Canvas group since there were pre-made templates available for use. I also liked smaller details, such as the section block called "Apple 1" where if clicked, a section block would appear with an apple symbol on the top left corner next to the title (the symbol can also be changed, which can add a certain flair to the page). Probably the things I wish could be improved are that there were more color schemes for the templates, and it was easier to move certain elements onto a page without having to delete them and re-insert them into the correct order.  Although a website maker would give users more freedom to design a website however way they want, the Canvas page maker is overall a good platform for creating a basic class website for a class. I think that a Canvas page would be appropriate for a K-12 class since the templates are simple to navigate (with or without adult supervision) and the class resources can all be found in their specific tabs.
